Clark wins Junior Miss Strasburg and Locke Miss Strasburg

Hardworking young ladies in Strasburg raised more than $5,000 for the community in the third annual Miss Strasburg pageant and second annual Junior Miss Strasburg pageant . Sarah Locke, 17, Strasburg, daughter of Scott and Natalie Locke was crowned Miss Strasburg and Marcail Clark, 15, Strasburg, daughter of Jack and Pam Clark was crowned Junior. Miss Strasburg.  In the Junior. Miss 1st runner up was Hannah Schumacher, 13, Strasburg, daughter of Gary and Julia Schumacher.

Retiring queens were, Baylee Quast, 17, Miss Strasburg, daughter of Jodie and Doug Quast, and  Olivia Telgmann, 14, Junior Miss Strasburg, daughter of Kim and Don Telgmann.

The event will be held at Grace Lutheran Church in Strasburg and in conjunction with the village’s Hog Roast on Aug. 31.  Other contestants were as follows:

Along with the pageant, the Strasburg Hog Roast and Gnome Fest boasted many other events, such as a craft and vendor fair, Farmer’s Rodeo, Home Run Derby, recognition of the Strasburg Volunteer Firemen and Hog Roast with all the fixin’s.

Strasburg Volunteer Firemen recently honored at the Strasburg Hog Roast

Several Strasburg Volunteer Firemen were recently honored at the Strasburg Hog Roast/Gnome Fest. Board Trustee John Beldon commended the group for giving of their time and effort to respond to a fire call.

All received a certificate for their years of loyal and dedicated service. Those who served more than 10 years on the department were also presented with “Years of Service” pins.  Receiving pins were Donnie Wallace, 45 years plus, Charlie Culver, 40 years, Larry Giertz, 35 years, Bob Neathery, 35 years, Brad Friese, 30 years plus, Jane Giertz, 25 years, John Jeisy 30 years, Brad Mathis, 25 years, Tom Newell, 25 years plus, Rick Wallace, 25 years plus, Kevin Mathis, 10 years plus and Twila Faletic, 10 years.  New members included Barry Wittenberg, Darrin Storm and Nick Esslinger.

The Strasburg Volunteer Firemen meet the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.  If anyone is interested in joining, please contact Chief Larry Giertz at 217.644.3044.

Strasburg Homecoming is a success!

Beautiful weather brought out droves of people for the 57 annual Strasburg Homecoming. Guests enjoyed good food, music, tractors and much more good entertainment, including a few competitions.

Friday night was the “Kiss the Pig” contest. The “lucky” winners were Nate Wascher of Stewardson and Brittany Bowers of Strasburg. The event raised more than $425 for community improvements.

The next morning was the annual 5K and 1 mile run/walk.  The winners are as follows:  Overall male and female winners were Grant Tice from Sullivan at 19:22 and Meredith Kull from Effingham at 23:18.  Winners receiving a trophy in the various age categories were- Female 13 & under: 1st Elizabeth Bowyer, Shelbyville, 2nd Whitney Smith, Stewardson, 3rd Rachel Kessler, Strasburg.  Female 14-19: 1st Morgan Stremming, Strasburg, 2nd Megan Cress, Strasburg, 3rd Sarah Luce, Strasburg. Female 20-29: 1st Carolyn Reed, Strasburg, 2nd Michelle Zacha, Strasburg, 3rd Laura Duncan, Strasburg. Female 30-39: 1st Holly Steiling, Moweaqua, 2nd Katy Lees, Decatur, 3rd Megan Rankin, Mattoon. After the run/walk was the first annual Strongman competition. Contestants flipped a 280 pound tire, lifted more than 400 pounds on a trailer, carried 200 pounds in the Farmer’s Carry, and finally pulled a 10,000 pound fire truck.

 Strongman winners – group 1 (195 pounds and under) 1st Josh Packer, Effingham, 2nd Rob Brown, Watson, and 3rd JT Friese, Stewardson.
Strongman winners – group 2 (196 and over) – 1st Jack Oye, Arthur, 2nd Tom Grove, Strasburg, and 3rd Cameron Hall, Decatur.
